How to Fit a Swimming Pool Liner – DIY Guide

There are four main reasons why you might want (or should) install a pool liner. You might want to install a pool liner:

  • To the new pool.
  • As a substitute for the liner in the pool that you already have.
  • To improve the appearance of the above ground pool (which does not require a liner).
  • Because you want to switch from tile pool layers to modern vinyl liners.

Depending on which one describes your situation, the pre-installation preparation will vary. You might also have the option (depending on your pool type) to choose either overlapping or beaded liner. (Overlapping liners will only work in above ground swimming pools, while beaded liners will be suitable for ponds of all constructions.)

But in all cases, you will need a smooth sidewall and a base that is free of projected objects and any obstructions that can pierce the new liner or prevent it from integrating with the horizontal and vertical surfaces of the pool.

Liner Installation

As prepared above, the complexity of the installation will be determined by the circumstances, e.g. pool conditions, pond construction and the type of liner you want.

If a bead liner is being installed instead of an existing pool that already has a track installed, then this track may be sufficient for new liner beads (although some repairs or cleaning may be needed).
